Grocery store chain Hy-Vee Inc. has bought more than 13 acres in the Prairie Trail residential and commercial development in Ankeny.

The company is planning on building a store there in two to three years, said Chris Friesleben, Hy-Vee’s spokeswoman. “We want to wait for more growth in the area,” she said.

Hy-Vee bought 13.4 acres for about $4.8 million recently from DRA Properties LC, Prairie Trail’s developer.

The planned Hy-Vee will include a large grocery store and likely a gas station and convenience store, Friesleben said.

It will be the second Ankeny location for Hy-Vee, which now operates a grocery at 410 N. Ankeny Blvd.

Prairie Trail is a 1,031-acre development north and west of Des Moines Area Community College that will include 3,000 homes.

Hy-Vee also recently bought 2.3 acres east of its West Des Moines headquarters for $1.4 million from Homesteaders Life Co. Friesleben said the land would probably be used to expand the company’s parking lot.
