A groundbreaking for the new Ankeny middle school is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. June 30 in the Prairie Trail development.

Upon completion of the Cherry Street extension, the school’s address will be 1020 S.W. Cherry St. The new middle school will be west of the new high school under construction in Prairie Trail.

To attend the groundbreaking, go west on Southwest Magazine Road from South Ankeny Boulevard, or east on Magazine from Southwest State Street, and follow the signs.
If it rains, the event will be held in the Northview Middle School gym, 1010 N.W. Prairie Ridge Drive.

The program will include comments by school board President Andrew Martin, Superintendent Matthew Wendt and Mayor Steve Van Oort.

The first phase of the school is scheduled to be complete in fall 2011; it is to house all the district’s 10th-graders for two years. The building is to be expanded and then serve half of the district’s eighth- and ninth-graders starting in fall 2013, when the district switches to a two-high-school system. The school is expected to accommodate 1,050 eighth- and ninth-grade students.
